So does this mean she has/had female children only? (Or were the boys allowed to be photographed?)
The children were a mixture of girls and boys.

I think she allowed photographs for private family use and enjoyment but didn't want them publically published in newspapers, magazines, etc.
(I am clueless. The term "lady" and the quoted statement bring first of all those to my mind who predated photography...)
Grace Coolidge ?
I am sorry, Gene, but it's not Grace Coolidge.

Hint #1: This was a 20th century President, but the quote came in the 19th century.

Edith Kermit Roosevelt
Kudos, Blaine, that is correct.

I was sort of taken aback when I first came across this quote, and even seeing it in context still seems surprising to me. The quote was made to newsmen in 1898.

Blaine, you win best wishes for a wonderful 2017.
What did Lincoln buy Mary on New years Eve when they were living in Springfield?
Gloves ?
Hair brush?
Handkerchieves, or soap? Or a comb?
All great guesses but none are correct.

Hint 1. It was practical and purchased early in their marriage.

A cook stove?
Laurie, it's not a stove, but a stove would be necessary to take advantage of this item.

Hint 2. Lincoln purchased two items that can be thought of as companion pieces.
Hint 3. Think "How to...."
