Doris Kearns Goodwin refers to Leo Tolstoy in her book, Team of Rivals, at page 747, as “the greatest writer of the age.” On page 748 of her book, she quotes Leo Tolstoy’s opinion on the subject of President Abraham Lincoln’s greatness:

“We are still too near to his greatness,” Tolstoy concluded, “but after a few centuries more our posterity will find him considerably bigger than we do. His genius is still too strong and too powerful for the common understanding; just as the sun is too hot when its light beams directly on us.”

It would appear that Walt Whitman and Leo Tolstoy thought much alike about the greatness of President Abraham Lincoln. Unfortunately for mankind, Tolstoy's prediction may well prove to be correct.

A portrait of President Abraham Lincoln hangs above the fireplace mantel.

All he had to do was look up. Teddy Roosevelt's desk faced the fireplace.

Isn't it odd that the picture on the wall is Lincoln without a beard. That means before Abraham Lincoln was President.

Lincoln was born in the waning days of the Jefferson administration. Jefferson dropped Burr from the ticket after Burr schemed to have the House elect him as President during the 1800 election. I think George Clinton was Jefferson's second vice president.
