Who is this man?

It bears a resemblance to John G. Nicolay, but that's only a half-hearted guess.

Nope, not him, Rob.

Hint #1: This man died in 1865.
Hint #1.5: He died in the state of New York.

Yes, Bill. That's right. Good job. Previously you had already won a $5 gift certificate which is good at your nearest Montgomery Ward store; I will now send you another one.
a) Who was this gentleman and
b) what was his contribution to the civil war?

1. Thaddeus Lowe.

2. Information on him here.
Chapeau, Roger. I didn't expect someone would nail it so quickly! You win a flight on the "Intrepid".
We have a volunteer at Surratt House who portrays Thaddeus Lowe at various events. We planned a children's event at the museum last year around his presentation. Our exhibit shop constructed the most wonderful replica of a hot air balloon to fit inside our meeting room! Children could step into the basket or gondola or whatever the passenger part is called and have their picture taken. Our artists had even constructed a "ground view" and a "sky view" in miniature. We have a photo of our Mr. Lowe in the balloon, and I will try to retrieve it for posting here.

I mentioned the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds in jest on another post this morning, but Mr Lowe and several other aeronauts tested reconnaissance balloons in the town of Bladensburg, Maryland, during the Civil War because of its close proximity to Washington, D.C.

Laurie sent this photo. She writes, "A few days ago, Eva posted about Thaddeus Lowe and I made a comment about the Surratt House having a Thaddeus Lowe and the wonderful balloon that our exhibit shop created for an event about him. Here’s the photo I promised. Believe it or not, the balloon is resting on the floor, not flying high."

What is this person's name? He was a doctor.

General Barnes?
That is a good guess, Eva, but it's not him. IMO this doctor was not as well known as Dr. Barnes.
