Good guesses, Steve and Michael, but not correct.

Hint#2: This person is not entirely new to this forum - he has been mentioned before as well as his unique connection to Lincoln.
Elbert Waller?
Nope, it's not Waller, Steve.
Hint #3: The connection between Lincoln and the man in the question was in the decade of the 1830s.
is it James Shields?
Nope, it's not James Shields, Gust.
Charles Maltby?
Nope, it's not Maltby, Steve.

Hint #4: Lincoln and this man are known for only one thing, and it happened on one day only.

I am 100% certain the photo was on the forum but cannot remember more. Was it a New Salem connection or someone from "politics" (the Long Nine maybe?)?
Lorenzo Thompson , the wrestler that downed Lincoln.
Your 'it happened one day' helped. Elizabeth helped too ... I started to think of Lincoln jumping out of the window ... and that led me on (somehow) to the wrestlers (I was going to check Jack Armstrong ... but read about Lorenzo again and saw his image)
You are right, Eva. Indeed it was on the forum several years ago. I'll post it again here. And, congratulations to Michael for figuring out that the man is Thompson. Kudos, Michael! Thompson is the only known opponent who beat Lincoln in wrestling. The original post is here.

I dont think that Lorenzo was the sort of man with whom anybody sober would choose to argue.
Yes, but he looks like a well-behaved gentleman.

Does he have a connection to Lincoln when Lincoln was older? IMO, he does not strike me as a New Salem type.
