Daniel Green Burner?
Excellent and very logical guess, Eva, but it was not Burner.

Hint #1: It was a New Salem resident who saw Lincoln lift this amazing poundage.
So not Bill Green either?
Joseph Gillespie?
Nope.
Rowan Herndon ?
Congratulations, Gene! Indeed it was Row Herndon, a cousin of William Herndon. It was also Row Herndon who said there were rumors of Lincoln fathering a couple of children during his New Salem years. Row Herndon departed New Salem in 1833 after accidentally (according to him) shooting and killing his wife. Apparently the New Salem residents were fairly evenly divided on whether the killing was accidental or on purpose.
Learn all about it on this years Springfield Tour when we visit New Salem.....
and please do not cross the police tape barrier.
This person is not very well known in her own right, but she has several connections to Lincoln scholarship. Who is she? No help from the web, please.
