That would make sense then. He was trying to learn a smattering of German for his newspaper, which he bought in 1859.

Is there anyplace online where a person could find some issues of the Illinois Staats-Anzeiger, Lincoln's German newspaper?

I'd like to find 1865 issues of the Illinois Staats Zeitung as well. The July 17, 1865 issue has an interview with George Vocke who was one of Seward's nurses. It would be great if we could find the "the written communications formerly published by us concerning the attempted assassination of Mr. SEWARD."

The New York Times published the article from the Illinois Staats Zeitung on July 20, 1865.

"From the Illinois Staats Zeitung, July 17.

Mr. GEORGE VOCKE, the soldier whom the Medical Director detailed to attend Mr. SEWARD as nurse, after the latter's accident by a fall, has favored us with interesting verbal information, in addition to the written communications formerly published by us, concerning the attempted assassination of Mr. SEWARD He speaks with the warmest enthusiasm of the sublimity of character which the venerable statesman evinced during that terrible period, in which GEORGE VOCKE spent many days and nights at his bedside."

The Daily National Republican has an abridged version of Vocke's interview dated August 7, 1865.
Linda,

It appears that the Newberry in Chicago has it on microfilm, but it's not circulating.

Institution: Newberry Library [non-circulating]
Location: General Collections 2nd floor
Call Number: A 6 .1664
Copy: 1
Reproduction Note: Microfilm. Jan.1865-July 1870 Chicago, Ill. : Flofilm [for] Newberry Library [19--] 2 microfilm reels : negative ; 35 mm. Reels held in 4A link.

Library Has (Summary): 1865:Jan.-1870:Juli

You might be able to hire a researcher to find it, or even see if the Newberry might copy it, since you know a specific date.

Roger, I cannot find any place that has the Illinois Staats-Anzeiger. It's possible they're lost to history.

Here's a link to an Illinois newspaper database.

Thanks, Rob. I had looked through the paper's holdings on Chronicling America but the listing for the Newberry is not as clear as what you posted, maybe because it's in German!
That's amazing Rob.
Can you help me find my keys?
Only if you can help me find my sanity. Smile

One Abraham Lincoln author called another Lincoln author's work fraudulent and "worse than useless."

Question 1: What was the name of the author who said this?

Question 1.5: What was the name of the author whose work was being criticized?
Paul Angle and Emanuel Hertz?

Good job, Rob. You are correct on both names.

The Correct Answer Review Board's Prize Vault (CARBPV) is getting low again. So the best I can do is offer you (1) two free tickets to Fred Smith's or (2) simply best wishes for a nice weekend. Your choice.
I'll take the nice weekend, Roger. I deal with people who have concrete for brains all the time, so that wouldn't be much of a prize. Smile

Good choice, Rob.

Regarding the concrete sculptures at his park, Fred Smith said, "Nobody knows why I made them, not even me."
