OK.... Especially in the early days of information Technology... why was data sometimes not received from one location for several hours?

The telegraph was down because the constitution of Nevada was being transmitted by telegraph so that Lincoln would get the state's three electoral votes. It was, according to a history of Nevada, the longest and costliest transmission over the telegraph wires.

Very good, Michael - indeed he went to Dr. Issachar Zacharie, a chiropodist. We have discussed him before on this forum. Lincoln sprained his wrist on September 13, 1862, and he saw Dr. Zacharie about the sprain on September 25, 1862.
