Information, data, from one part of the country was prevented from getting to Washington for 5 hours due to ...?

OK.... Especially in the early days of information Technology... why was data sometimes not received from one location for several hours?
Something that seemed very important to Lincoln occurred on October 31, 1864

One of Roger's attempts is directly related to that event on 31 October 1864
the event had some long term influence on Washington DC (obviously) ... but primarily it happened on the other side of the US

What, apart from the votes of ordinary citizens, is the determining factor in a Presidential election in the USA?
The telegraph was down because the constitution of Nevada was being transmitted by telegraph so that Lincoln would get the state's three electoral votes. It was, according to a history of Nevada, the longest and costliest transmission over the telegraph wires.

Very good, Michael - indeed he went to Dr. Issachar Zacharie, a chiropodist. We have discussed him before on this forum. Lincoln sprained his wrist on September 13, 1862, and he saw Dr. Zacharie about the sprain on September 25, 1862.
