I am sorry, Bill and Roger, but it's not New York or West Virginia.

Hint #1: Abraham Lincoln did visit this state but not as President.
Scenery looks more like New England to me - did he ever travel that far north? I know he visited Niagara Falls several times, but I don't count that as New England.

Massachusetts? Maybe Wisconsin?
I am sorry, Laurie, but it's not Massachusetts or Wisconsin.

Oregon
I am sorry, Steve, Darrell, and Bill, but it's not Missouri, Vermont, or Oregon.
Hint #2: Two of the guesses so far are states that have a common border with the correct answer.
Iowa, or possibly New Jersey?
I am sorry, Steve, but it's not Iowa or New Jersey.
Hint #3: Robert Lincoln spent time in this state.

Massachusetts - ( ie chance #38)
New Hampshire, where Robt. attended school?
Excellent, Joe! Indeed it's New Hampshire where Robert attended Phillips Academy in Exeter before going to Harvard.

The photo was taken in Peterborough. The river is the Contoocook River. Lincoln was never in Peterborough, and his time in New Hampshire was prior to his growing a beard. Thus, the figure in the photo is not Lincoln.

This was a tough one - kudos, Joe.
