RE: A Sandburg Stumper
My next two guesses as to who wrote to Herndon:
Ward Hill Lamon or William E. Barton Barton seems like he might write something like that, but I think he was only able to correspond with Weik due to Herndon's death. So, I'm going to go with Lamon. |

RE: A Sandburg Stumper
Correct, Steve. It was Lamon.
In 1948 when Donald was writing Lincoln's Herndon, he had asked Sandburg to write the preface, which Sandburg agreed to do. Donald wrote the letter to Sandburg relating the story of how Herndon didn't want his picture taken for Lamon's biography of Lincoln, but that he eventually relented. When DaCapo Press brought out the reprint of Lincoln's Herndon, the Sandburg preface was not included. I've often wondered if Randall had urged Donald to ask Sandburg to write the preface and Donald did so only to please his mentor. RE: A Sandburg Stumper
To whom (or what) was a correspondent of Sandburg's referring to when he said that Sandburg "had made an honest woman out of her?"

RE: A Sandburg Stumper
Wild guess: Nancy Hanks? I know some unproven rumors existed including that she had a fling with a young John C. Calhoun. I think Sandburg ignored all the unproven rumors.

That's a logical guess Roger, but it isn't the answer.

Sorry Gene. That isn't it.
The question was asked in such a way as to throw a shadow. The answer is not a person. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

RE: A Sandburg Stumper
Rob's question was To whom (or what) was a correspondent of Sandburg's referring to when he said that Sandburg "had made an honest woman out of her?"
woops ... its always a good idea to read the question ( I thought it was Lincoln , not Sandburg, that had 'made an honest woman' of something/one) “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |
