RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia
Brilliant, Bill. This is how Wiki puts this (hi)story:
"Harrison was the first president to campaign actively for office. He did so with the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler too". Tippecanoe referred to Harrison's military victory over a group of Shawnee Indians at a river in Indiana called Tippecanoe in 1811. For their part, Democrats laughed at Harrison for being too old for the presidency, and referred to him as "Granny", hinting that he was senile. Said one Democratic newspaper: 'Give him a barrel of hard cider, and ... a pension of two thousand [dollars] a year ... and ... he will sit the remainder of his days in his log cabin.' Whigs took advantage of this quip and declared that Harrison was 'the log cabin and hard cider candidate', a man of the common people from the rough-and-tumble West. They depicted Harrison's opponent, President Martin Van Buren, as a wealthy snob who was out of touch with the people. In fact, it was Harrison who came from a family of wealthy planters, while Van Buren's father was a tavernkeeper. Harrison however moved to the frontier and for years lived in a log cabin, while Van Buren had been a well-paid government official." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_S...tion,_1840 Bill, I'm afraid the 2000$ pension is not in the prize vault, so you win a barrel of cider. |

RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia
I shall have to share it with Laurie as the answer did not come to me immediately when I saw the photos, but after reading Laurie's reference to hard cider, I remembered Harrison's campaign slogan.

RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia
Barrel reminds me just of the following story:
New Salem resident Daniel Green Burner recalled Lincoln handling such barrels as follows: "Physically, Mr. Lincoln was the strongest man I ever knew. That is saying a good deal. Let me tell you what I saw him do. He took a full barrel of whisky, containing forty-four gallons, gripping each end with one hand, raised it deliberately to his face and drank from the bunghole." (He allegedly won a 10$ hat for doing this.) |

This is an excellent guess, Roger, but it wasn't Ike.

RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia
I remember that George W. Bush made a secret visit to Baghdad to surprise the troops at Thanksgiving. Could this be a turkey from that visit?

Good try, Eva, but it is not Ike. You are in the right century with your guess.
