Excellent guess, Gene, but it's not "Silent Cal."

It either has something to do with a chicken in every pot and a car for every garage
or smoking pot in a car with a chicken

Herbert Hoover or Bill Clinton?
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Good job, Gene! It is Herbert Hoover. You win the chicken, but not the car.

Seems I have to guess, too, today. Well then: Was she born in the 19th century and did she die in the 20th?

Hint#1: Excellent guess, yes. (Actually she died exactly 30 years before I was born.)

After Lincoln's death Mary wore black morning clothes until she died. There was however a day she made an exception. When was it?

It was Tad's birthday. I don't remember which, but it was one of the last ones before he died. She wore a black silk dress instead, at his request.

Toia, you are correct. The exception was for Tad's 18th birthday. Your prize is a choice of flowers for your hair and fabric in your choice of bold blue, magenta, canary yellow or royal purple- some of Mary's favorites.
