A Sandburg Stumper

You got it, Gene. The Sandburg's were speaking with three of the actors from the movie, which for some strange reason filmmaker George Stevens hired Sandburg as a consultant. While he didn't do much of note he did receive a credit in the film. One of the actors he is speaking to is Ed Wynn.

I found this picture on the University of Illinois digital website. They have thousands of pictures from several years of Sandburg's life.

I have visited Connemara Farms in Flat Rock, NC and noticed that Sandburg had a bust of Lincoln by the well-known artist Leo Cherne and, since I have a copy of that bust on one of the shelves housing my Lincoln books, I was delighted to be in such select company. If I knew how to add a photo, I would attach one of the bust I own.

Wild guess: Sandburg realized Connemara was on a hill. Abraham and Mary Lincoln were married in the Edwards' home which was located in a section of Springfield known as Aristocracy Hill.

I took the tour of Cannemara. What a fascinating NP site. As I recall, the item you may be referring to wasn't owned by Lincoln or any specific person with a Lincoln connection. I can't remember if it was a chair, a desk or a work table made out of wood that came from the Lincoln White House.

Anita, your memory seeved you well. It was a table made out of wood from the White House during the time of the Lincoln administration. It was presented to Sandburg after he won the Pulitzer prize for "The War Years." Great job!

Do you know where in the White House the wood was located? I can't find any info on it.

I don't. I got the question from the latest issue of Inklings and Idlings, the newsletter of the Sandburg birthplace, and the only thing it said was that the wood came from a renovation and was fashioned into a table which was then presented to Sandburg.

As an initial clue, some writers were surprised as this person's warm words for Sandburg.
