Sandburg would have been 135 years old today. I spent a good bit of yesterday looking through the Boston Globe for Sandburg material and came away with a ton of articles. Right now I'm in the process of outlining the sample chapter for my Tarbell proposal, but I doubt I'll have it ready by the end of the month.

Rob, have you read Portrait for Posterity: Lincoln and His Biographers, by Benjamin Thomas?

I read his biography of Lincoln recently and I'm in the middle of his and Hyman's work on Stanton. I'm very impressed by his writing and research
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I have Gene. It's an interesting book. Thomas allowed Sandburg to read it before it was published, but Sandburg told Thomas he had no problems with its contents.

Thomas did his doctoral dissertation on "Russo-American Relations, 1815–1867." Oh well, diplomatic history's loss is Lincoln studies gain.

Who did Sandburg appoint as his official bibliographer (notice BIBLIOGRAPHER, not BIOGRAPHER)?

Rob,

The LOC has a bibliography done by Mark Van Doren--so that is my answer. Glad to see your trivia entry; you must be doing better. Keep up the good rehab and recovery.

First, thanks for the kind words Joe. I am doing better and since rehab started, I have something to look forward to (although I'm more than ready to go back to work). I'm also working on Tarbell again, which is a major relief for me.

Van Doren is a good guess, but it isn't the correct answer.

That's it Bill. Ralph G. Newman was appointed by Sandburg and at one point had the largest collection of Sandburgania in the world. His collection makes up part of the Harry G. Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin.
