This quote is from 1864, and while considered a Radical Republican, he was no supporter of Lincoln and his policies.
Sorry, I see the question but now. Thaddeus Stevens?

RE: Who Said This?
Both excellent responses. Your on the right path, but it's somebody else.

As a sidebar here is a somewhat related question.
I can see from my previous post I may have made a grammatical error.
"I can see do to the outpouring of responses, a hint is needed"

Should I have said
a) do
b) dew
c) due
or.....
d) we don't really care just give us the next hint

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

RE: Who Said This?
Due! (I hope there's a decent prize to win so that decades of studying the language finally pay off....)

Forgot - I have another guess. Sumner?

Congratulations, that puts you in first place with this current hotly contested trivia question.
And, to answer your question, rest assured that only the highest quality of prizes are awarded on Roger's Forum.

RE: Who Said This?
Sorry, Boutwell is not the correct answer.

This is what Lincoln had to saw about the author of our mystery quote -
According to Noah Brooks, Lincoln said “I’ve been told that insanity is hereditary in his family, and I think we will admit the plea in his case,”

and this from John Nicolay
"When Mr. Lincoln was told by Gustavus Fox on election night that _____ had been defeated, Fox added, “It served him right.” The President’s response was much more temperate: “You have more of that feeling of personal resentment than I. Perhaps I have too little of it; but I never thought it paid. A man has no time to spend half his life in quarrels. If any man ceases to attack me, I never remember the past against him.”

RE: Who Said This?
I'm sure "With A Little Bit of Luck" you can win.
Then, "Wouldn't it be Lovely" if that happens.
This contest wouldn't be the same "Without You"
So, "Just You Wait"
because sooner or later we will all be saying (or singing) "You Did It"
Unfortunately, should you win, we are unable to deliver the prize for this trivia contest "On the Street Where You Live"

(with my apologies to "My Fair Lady")

RE: Who Said This?
Congratulations to.......Roger
Henry W Davis was the other half to the famous Wade - Davis bill. Every Republican in the Senate and all but six Republicans in the House had voted for the Wade - Davis bill. The bill was to take the process of reconstruction out of the Presidents hands. Only Lincoln's pocket veto kept the reconstruction process under the control of the executive branch.

Wade and Davis were really, really annoyed. Really. Interestingly enough, seven month later, when Congress had the chance, they failed to adopt any reconstruction legislation. The approaching end of the congressional session left the reconstruction entirely in Lincoln's hands. Hence, the Davis quote. (Most of this info from "Lincoln" by David Donald)

Thanks to all who participated.
Roger, your magnificent prize is not just one, but two Cozy Dogs, from the Cozy Dog Drive Inn in Springfield Illinois.
Your prize is redeemable from September 30-October 2, the weekend of the Springfield Tour. (We on the prize committee wanted to make sure you had plenty of time to make your travel arrangements) If your are unable to redeem your prize I am happy to inform you it is 100% transferable to a member of your choice on the forum.

Thanks, Gene. Speaking of dogs my favorites when we lived in Illinois were from Mickey's and Portillo's. There is nothing where we live now comparable to those two spots.

RE: Who Said This?
We've all quoted this in one form or another, but without looking it up, who said this?

"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Now for a little bit of fun, how would you revise the quote?

Those who cannot learn history, are doomed to get a barely passing grade
Rolleyes
