No. 10,000
As of 1:49 pm this afternoon, June 28, 2013, Surratt House opened its doors to visitor #10,000 for the year. We skipped the confetti, but staff did greet the young man with applause and a remembrance gift. This is the second year in a row that we have gone over 10,000 visitors. That may be small potatoes for Mt. Vernon, but it's impressive for a small museum that has to compete with the multiple museums just twelve miles away in D.C.

And, Joe Beckert, eat your Yankee heart out -- the young man was visiting from Savannah, Georgia!

That's great! I hope you have more next year!

Congratulations Laurie and all the other hard workers at the Surratt House Museum. A great “little” museum! And the James O. Hall Research Center to boot.

Shame on you, Herb -- but I do expect to see you in March.....?

Joe - You served us well as a shuttle driver. But, could you bring a larger van next year? I'll reward you with more Moon Pies.

Website is quickly becoming a dirty word to me. Julie checked on Tuesday and was told that we are in a line of applicants that are being reviewed by the server to assure legitimacy of our new domain name. Meanwhile, the server continues to send monthly bills. I could have produced a baby faster!!!!!

RE: No. 10,000
One very important element of those attendance figures matters the most to old-school-teacher me -- we were able to serve nearly 3500 school children through tours and in-school programs. This does not include the children who come for the regular tours with their parents. And one of the neatest things is to have the school children bring their parents back for a tour. My office is very near the admissions area, so I can hear them tell our volunteers that they have been to the museum on a field trip, or that Miss Julie gave a great program at their school. To me, that's what it is all about...

Laurie, Congratulations to you and your volunteers for a job well done. I also have not been down to see the Surratt museum but hope to soon. What was really exciting to me is what you said about the children bringing their parents back for tours. Like they say the children are our future. It is good to know that they are taking an interest in their country's history. I am sure that both you and your volunteers make the tour very interesting. Best of luck in the future. Best Gary
