RE: Springfield Tour
Saying that a hot dog is made from chicken lips means that it contains things you probably don't even want to know about--fillers that don't belong in a product that is supposed to consist of meat. Lovers of Chicago Dogs are getting an all-beef Vienna hot dog--the filet mignon of hot dogs. This is cradled on a poppy seed bun (probably from Rosen's bakery) and topped with yellow mustard, a relish of such a bright hue of green that it might have originated in Chernobyl, chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, a dill pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt--and THE place to get them---SUPER DAWG at Milwaukee & Devon. Even tour buses are known to queue up at that location.

This is more than you probably wanted to know. Essentially, I wanted you to know that chicken lips was meant as a pejorative only as it applies to hot dogs.

RE: Springfield Tour
How are Chicago dogs now related to Viennese Würstel?

Actually the "Würstelstand" is the Vienna Cozy Dog version and most popular food stand. The top ten:

Don't know about chicken lips therein. But very popular are horse meat sausages.

Here is my idea of what a Chicago dog should look like:

I had one at a White Sox game when I was 7. It was heaven on earth, but not as good as an Esskay

in Center Field at Camden Yards, Esskay has a gourmet hot dog stand that sells favorites of mine, one being a hot dog with mac and cheese and crab meat, and the other being the Orioles signature Chesapeake crab dip, both favorites for this life long Birds fan. Laurie, I know you'll need Pepto Bismol for this.

Also, every Wednesday White Sox home game is Dollar Dog Night. Three Tuesdays this summer is 10 cent Hot Dogs at the West Michigan Whitecaps games in Grand Rapids. I might have to drag my girlfriend to those.

Thomas, I think I could handle a hot dog with mac and cheese, but the thought of ruining perfectly good crab meat by putting it (in any shape and form) on a hot dog is a sacrilege. To heck with the Pepto, hand me a barf bag. Excuse me, folks, but no one messes with my Maryland blue crabs.

All I can say is that if our unscheduled visit to the Cozy Dog gets this much attention and discussion, you can only imagine what the rest of the tour holds in store.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

You should try a hot dog with Ben's Famous Chilli on it at Nationals Park.

Had a hot dog with Ben's famous chili years ago at his nationally recognized Ben's Chili Bowl downtown years ago. I've had better... Ben's gets good, free publicity because of several famous customers like Cosby and Obama.

RE: Springfield Tour
I am planning to take part in the Springfield Tour 2018!

I live in SW Pennsylvania, and I have mostly decided that I should probably fly round-trip. But I haven't been on an airplane, I think, in this century. I'm wondering what approach the frequent flyers take to find the best flights.

I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863)

Hi,

Can you fly from where you are into Dayton, OH? If so, you could fly into Dayton on Wednesday, drive over to Springfield with me on Thursday, drive back with me on Sunday and leave Dayton Sunday late or Monday. You can stay with me in Troy. The airfare may be cheaper this way. Let me know. Let me know your e-mail so I can send you my phone no.

Joe
