RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate
It is truly magnificent, but I understand that it was in very poor condition when the last of the Lincoln heirs left it. Even animals had been allowed to contribute to its deterioration.

In one of the photos there is a light-colored sofa. Is that the sofa Joe B. touched and Fido might have slept on?

No, Roger, it was upstairs. I may be going back this winter. I'll take pictures this time. Hildene is absolutely gorgeous. If I could pick one home to spend the rest of my days in, that would be it.

I never got to sleep on that couch. I had nothing to do with the deterioration of the home (I'm not pointing paws, but they did have a few cats)
Fido So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

If I remember correctly, RTL's granddaughter allowed raccoons and assorted critters to roam the halls.

She was an interesting personality from what I've heard. She did things a lot of women of the era didn't, including driving an automobile and piloting her own plane.

RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate
Hi Ashley. Have you ever visited Mary Lincoln's Coterie? It is a very nice website operated by 3 ladies. One of these ladies is Donna McCreary, a member of our forum here. About themselves, the ladies say, "We are good friends who share a common interest – that interest being Mary Lincoln."
Additionally, they say, "Every year in July, we met in Springfield, IL for a few days closest to the anniversary of Mary Lincoln’s death. During these days, we host a wreath laying ceremony at the Lincoln Tomb; participate in performances and lectures at The Lincoln Home; host a Memorial Luncheon; and participate in a variety of other events and programs." Anyway, there is a review of the book you are going to read if you look near the bottom of the coterie's web page here. The home page for Mary Lincoln's coterie is here. |

Roger, thanks for mentioning Mary Lincoln's Coterie! I have been lazy when it comes to writing book reviews for the website, but did manage to write one about "Three Mary's and a Jesse."
Ashley, when you finish reading the book, please let us know your opinions. |

Fort Myers, where Roger lives, has the Edison home, which was one of my favorite places to visit when I lived in Naples. At one time it had, among the hundreds of plants that Edison had planted to test for light-bulb filament usage, plants of other kinds as well.
