Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Linda Anderson - 11-21-2012 08:36 AM What a beautiful house! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2235997/Abraham-Lincolns-sons-mansion-Hildene-open-public-Vermont.html RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Laurie Verge - 11-21-2012 09:09 AM It is truly magnificent, but I understand that it was in very poor condition when the last of the Lincoln heirs left it. Even animals had been allowed to contribute to its deterioration. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - RJNorton - 11-21-2012 09:16 AM In one of the photos there is a light-colored sofa. Is that the sofa Joe B. touched and Fido might have slept on? RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - J. Beckert - 11-21-2012 09:26 AM No, Roger, it was upstairs. I may be going back this winter. I'll take pictures this time. Hildene is absolutely gorgeous. If I could pick one home to spend the rest of my days in, that would be it. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Gene C - 11-21-2012 09:37 AM I never got to sleep on that couch. I had nothing to do with the deterioration of the home (I'm not pointing paws, but they did have a few cats) Fido RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Laurie Verge - 11-21-2012 12:14 PM If I remember correctly, RTL's granddaughter allowed raccoons and assorted critters to roam the halls. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - J. Beckert - 11-21-2012 01:03 PM She was an interesting personality from what I've heard. She did things a lot of women of the era didn't, including driving an automobile and piloting her own plane. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Ashley Norman - 11-21-2012 01:53 PM It looks wonderful, Am about to read a book about RTL and his wife and childrean there at the mansion, One day I hope to get there and see it in person. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Laurie Verge - 11-21-2012 03:56 PM I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Lincolns by Charles Lachmann. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - RJNorton - 11-22-2012 05:10 AM Hi Ashley. Have you ever visited Mary Lincoln's Coterie? It is a very nice website operated by 3 ladies. One of these ladies is Donna McCreary, a member of our forum here. About themselves, the ladies say, "We are good friends who share a common interest – that interest being Mary Lincoln." Additionally, they say, "Every year in July, we met in Springfield, IL for a few days closest to the anniversary of Mary Lincoln’s death. During these days, we host a wreath laying ceremony at the Lincoln Tomb; participate in performances and lectures at The Lincoln Home; host a Memorial Luncheon; and participate in a variety of other events and programs." Anyway, there is a review of the book you are going to read if you look near the bottom of the coterie's web page here. The home page for Mary Lincoln's coterie is here. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Donna McCreary - 11-23-2012 10:32 PM Roger, thanks for mentioning Mary Lincoln's Coterie! I have been lazy when it comes to writing book reviews for the website, but did manage to write one about "Three Mary's and a Jesse." Ashley, when you finish reading the book, please let us know your opinions. RE: Hildene, Robert Lincoln's Vermont estate - Jim Page - 11-29-2012 05:01 PM Fort Myers, where Roger lives, has the Edison home, which was one of my favorite places to visit when I lived in Naples. At one time it had, among the hundreds of plants that Edison had planted to test for light-bulb filament usage, plants of other kinds as well. --Jim |
