For those of you interested, there is a book "Don't Shoot That Boy" by Thomas Lowery, that has been mentioned on the forum.
http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussio...y#pid63136 It doesn't go in to much detail on the individual cases Lincoln reviewed, Steve has gone into more detail than any of the cases I remember reading about in this book. I'll dig it out and see what I can find. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

Gene, I could not find any of the names in that book. "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |

Thanks David for burning the midnight oil so I wouldn't have to.

There was a short list of names in Steve's post yesterday and there was a book index in "Don't Shoot That Boy". David, a big thanks for posting the letter from the Portland Advertiser and to Steve for his amazing research. I'm looking forward to reading what became of the other men.
The subject of desertion during the Civil War and the military judicial system developed to deal with it, is indeed a complex subject. |
