Lincoln wrote this in his first autobiography. It was very brief and written for the Dictionary of Congress in 1858.

I think it's the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish civil war, but that is all I know.

Yes, Ernest Hemingway was a writer and was in the Spanish Civil War. But he was from the US.
