I don't recall seeing this quote before yesterday. I read it in an article by Dr. Emmet F. Pearson in the February 1975 Illinois Medical Journal. Thanks to Dr. Blaine Houmes for sending me the article.

Eva, that is exactly what I thought when I first read the quote yesterday. I looked in Herndon's Lincoln, but I could not find it. Maybe it's in there, and I just missed it.

Eva, I am very surprised. Regarding Mr. Wood Jean Baker writes, "At some point Mary Lincoln and William Wood had become friends and possibly more." I think I have read the "possibly more" implication in at least one other book. That's why I figured Abraham would not make a "fine taste" comment about Mr. Wood.
