Roger got it! Dr. Mary Walker. At the 1902 trial, she annoyed the press by sitting in a prime seat at their table. Occasionally, she munched on hickory nuts, to the amusement of the defendant. (The male defendants at the conspiracy trial had also been amused, in their case by Dr. Walker's Bloomerite attire.) Dr. Walker wore "male attire" at the 1902 trial and applauded when a lawyer who had been wrangling over the identity of a hair comb predicted that one day women would serve on juries and would be able to determine such matters.

Around this time (pre-Christmas) in 1883 something happened that is part of the larger Lincoln assassination saga. What happened?

Did this have something to do with the attempt to steal Lincoln's body from his tomb?

Logical guess, Roger, but incorrect. That strange event happened in 1876.

Seeing that there was no restrictions on googling, it was when Henry Rathbone murdered Clara Harris.

Right, Rob! I believe I have books which say it happened on December 23, and others which say December 24. I am not sure which date is correct.

Thanks to Bill B. for this research challenge:

Four men involved in the 1865 trial (respectively outcome) of the Lincoln assassination conspirators were later considered as candidates for nomination for President of the United States. None of them however became President.

Who were they?
