Conspirator Christmas

I first saw this idea on BoothieBarn last December; and again, on Dave's twitter just the other day. I absolutely loved Dave's idea for decorating a Christmas tree and decided to make my own version of a "Conspirator Christmas Tree."

Nice! I think only we who love Lincoln and the era can appreciate a tree such as yours. I decorated a Lincoln themed tree a few years ago. People thought I was nuts. They were probably correct- but so what? I've earned it.

The first room shown is the State Dining Room. In 1865, I believe it was the East Room where Lincoln's body was lying in state. I'm assuming the theme in here has to do with nutcrackers, those wonderful inventions of German craftsmen. We were recently considering themes for next year's displays at Surratt House during the season, and I was amazed (and upset) to find that nutcrackers did not become popular in the U.S. until the 1950s, when people began to admire the ones returning with our WWII soldiers. It was around that time also that the wonderful Nutcracker Suite of the century before came across the pond.

This variety of displays does not cover all of the decorated rooms (at least I don't think it does), but the decorations seem much more modern - and less nostalgic - than in previous years. Maybe it's just me getting old...

Thanks, Laurie - wonderful link. As for the theme I guess it's inspired from the traditional Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) Xmas craft and woodcutting:

That was the history I learned while searching for the story of nutcrackers. Fascinating.

I couldn't help thinking that the giant nutcracker in the first photo would have been a sturdy guard over Mr. Lincoln's catafalque.

Mikey, the Laser-Eyed O'Laughlen
Had a Pair of Bright Red Eyes
And if you ever saw him, you'd
see he lit up the skies....

All the other conspirators used to
laugh and call him names; they
never let poor Mikey, join in their
Quoits games -

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,
Santa came to say, "Mikey,
with your eyes so bright, won't
you drive my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the others loved him,
as they shouted out with glee,
"Mikey, the Laser-Eyed O'Laughlen,
You'll go down in History!"
