That must have been a common saying back then.
Your "Honorable Mention" prize is a, well unfortunately you will have to settle for a Crusty Cur, also from the Cozy Dog, same time, same place.
My mouth tells me that I would do well to avoid either the Crusty Cur or the Cozy Dog, but thanks.
The site that I quoted is run by the Lehrman Institute, so I would still like to question whether the saying originated with Herndon or did he copy from Seward? Or, did David Donald misquote the source? For some reason, I cannot copy and paste that particular paragraph onto this forum.

You win another Crusty Cur from the Cozy Dog.
The best menu item ever at the Cozy Dog. I went when I was 10, but if I attend school in Springfield I might make a Super Size Me type challenge out of the Cozy Dog.

What is a Super Size Me challenge?

Hint #1: He said this about more than one. I am sorry I am going to give up on this one. When Mrs. Welles came to view Carpenter's EP painting and saw it was still in progress, she told the newspapers made her believe it was nearly finished. Carpenter called the newspaper reports " unreliable," and Mr. Lincoln added: "That is to say, Mrs. Welles, that they lie and then they re-lie!".
Roger, thanks for guessing, you win another Cozy Dog dish.
