The site that I quoted is run by the Lehrman Institute, so I would still like to question whether the saying originated with Herndon or did he copy from Seward? Or, did David Donald misquote the source? For some reason, I cannot copy and paste that particular paragraph onto this forum.

The footnote for the quote in "Lincoln's Herndon" is - Herndon to Lyman Trumbull, January 27, 1861, Trumbull MSS.

I concede defeat. I did some checking, and two other sources (mrlincolnandfriends and abrahamlincolnclassroom) give Herndon as the source. My apologies for steering anyone wrong.

MSS used to mean "manuscript" and indicate that it was not a published book. Not sure if it still means that in this day and age.

The quote reminds me of something A. Lincoln once said, so my question is not "who", but "whom" - whom considered he to lie and later re-lie? (And I guess it won't challenge you although I tried to make it cheating-resistant.)
