				RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia
(08-09-2023 08:13 PM)Rob Wick Wrote: Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. There is certainly nothing wrong with expressing the opinion that you don't like something. However, Tarbell is talking about seeing Lincoln in person, not through the photographer's lens. Note "the living man himself." NO, she was talking about "see[ing] the great soul of Lincoln in Barnard's statue." In the statue photograph that I saw, President Lincoln's face looked like it was created out of volcano lava. "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |

You don't like it. Big surprise. I'm too busy working on something that matters to play semantics with you. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

Who wrote about Tarbell, "I wanted to put her under a little obligation to me and if her letters since are anything I have succeeded."?

Good guess Roger, but it's not him. I completely forgot to mention I would prefer no Googling, but if anyone did that it won't be a disqualifier.

Sorry Roger, but it isn't Barton. I really don't have too many clues that won't immediately give it away, so I will give one more and then if no one guesses correctly, I will give it away.

				RE: Tough Tarbell Trivia

Sorry, Roger, but it's not Speed. I think I will call it. It was Robert Todd Lincoln. Lincoln was writing John Hay explaining why he gave Tarbell the photo that was used in her series on Abraham Lincoln in McClure's. I got the letter from Jason Emerson who discussed it in his blog on his website.
