RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
Danke, Eva. That was a tough one. With so much more Advent Trivia fun to be had yet, I can't say how I figured that out, but if we were playing poker, someone would have shot me by now.

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
I hate to rain on Joseph's parade, but this particular photo is incorrect. If you had shown the original Marshall House from the Civil War era, he would be 100% correct. However, that original building was completely demolished in the 1950s, and the photo that was shown is of what is now the Hotel Monaco on that corner. If you re-read the plaque, you'll see that the wording is somewhat strange in the first sentence, but does say "stood" instead of confirming that the real building still exists.
I've laughed before about the plaque on the new building because it credits the first combat death as that of Mr. Jackson, a civilian owner of the Marshall House in 1861. In Civil War history, the site is better known for being where Lincoln friend, Elmer Ellsworth, was killed by Jackson as Union forces under Ellsworth attempted to take down the Confederate flag. Google Marshall House and Elmer Ellsworth for the full story -- and the correct photo of what Marshall House looked like. |

Even I can detect the word "hairsplitting" in the German language! I figured my little dig would get on your Yankee nerves, Joseph. Don't pout; I won't ask that a point be taken away from you. I'm content to just irritate you.

I don't know, Laurie..... The correct response to Eva's question of "What is #11 [the photo], respectively what happened here?" necessitated an identification of the site and a statement of the event which occurred at that site. While the building itself is not the original to at which stood at the time of the event, it stands on the same site and is built in the same style of the original (which certainly aids in the identification of the current structure and the event that transpired there). While perhaps in a shorthand manner, Mr. Beckert correctly identified the site (albeit the original structure no longer exists) of the Marshall House (in Old Town, Alexandria, VA) and the event which made it famous, namely the death of Col. Ellsworth. Therefore, I believe that he has earned and is entitled to the point, gold star sticker, set of steak knives, trip the the Cayman Islands, and/or the new car prize(s) that was/were associated with this question. (Batteries not included.) PS - On the site today (i.e., on the southeast corner of King and S. Pitt Streets) is, as Laurie identified it, the Hotel Monaco Alexandria. I interpreted Eva's question to be one about the historical site and event; not about the physical structure today. |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
Thank you, Bill. While the steak knives and the trip to the Cayman Islands sound wonderful, I'd be happy to just keep my hard earned point. If I were running this thread, I might penalize The Director a point and put her on Advent Trivia probation, but I'll leave that up to Frau Eva.
Until then, I'm waiting for 6:00 and my next chance at becoming this year's Advent Trivia Champion. "There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation more than Dixie - Jonah Goldberg" |

I, too, without reading Bill's post, was just going to say:
Can we agree on that Joe correctly answered to "what happened here", plus gave the correct address? Well then, what hides behind #12? Guesswhat.....jpg (Size: 4.11 KB / Downloads: 28) |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
I have no clue what that is, but I have to take a guess. Is that a clip of the Liberty weeping at Lincoln's bier woodcut? Are you going to take a point from Laurie?

Joe, I love your fearless fighting spirit. Brilliant guess. I am afraid you will have to think of another guess.

My eyes are not seeing this well, so this guess may be way off.
Is this the eagle emblem that decorated the side of the original Abraham Lincoln funeral train car? |

Another excellent idea, Roger, but I am sorry to say it's not correct.
Hint #1: Abraham Lincoln saw this. |

RE: Trivia Advent Calendar
I'm pretty sure that's a clip of a standing photograph of Booth taken in St. Louis in 1863.
