RE: In What Year Did It Happen?
Okay, here goes nothing.
Russia was among the first countries to present official condolences upon the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. The message came in a letter on behalf of the Tsar from Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov, Russia’s foreign minister from 1856–1882, who wrote, “it is easy for me to realize in advance the impression which the news of this odious crime will cause his Imperial Majesty to experience.” So I will say Mikhail Gorbachev, 1865, Lincoln's assassination, in the drawing room, with a candlestick (poor attempt at humor). Still no idea about the end of the world. Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
I want the respect of intelligent men, but I will choose for myself the intelligent. --Carl Sandburg
