Dr. Mudd Newsletter
I just received the latest newsletter from the Mudd Society and there is article titled "Grenfell's Memorial." A woman named Nancy Hitt erected a cenotaph to honor George Grenfell's who presumably drowned while escaping from Fort Jefferson. He served in the Confederate army and was sentenced to death for his activities later in the war. His sentence was commuted to life in prison and he became friends with the other conspirators in the Dry Tortugas.
Seems like an innocent way to memorialize an interesting character who has no known burial spot by a kind hearted elderly lady. But not all is as it seems with Ms. Hitt. She is a supporter of the skin head movement, the KKK and worked for a racist publication in Kentucky. She attended the trial of a grand dragon accused of threatening a local black group and was forced to leave for photographing the group during the trial and then cursing them as she was escorted from the courthouse. |
