Dr. Mudd Newsletter - Rsmyth - 01-23-2014 08:24 AM

I just received the latest newsletter from the Mudd Society and there is article titled "Grenfell's Memorial." A woman named Nancy Hitt erected a cenotaph to honor George Grenfell's who presumably drowned while escaping from Fort Jefferson. He served in the Confederate army and was sentenced to death for his activities later in the war. His sentence was commuted to life in prison and he became friends with the other conspirators in the Dry Tortugas.
Seems like an innocent way to memorialize an interesting character who has no known burial spot by a kind hearted elderly lady. But not all is as it seems with Ms. Hitt. She is a supporter of the skin head movement, the KKK and worked for a racist publication in Kentucky. She attended the trial of a grand dragon accused of threatening a local black group and was forced to leave for photographing the group during the trial and then cursing them as she was escorted from the courthouse.

Does the newsletter go into Ms Hitt's background? I don't get the newsletter, so this is new, news to me.

Whoa. Thanks for the info, Rich. I also read it as the actions of a nice old lady wanting to mark forgotten Confederate soldiers. I doubt the Mudd Society knows about her other interests.

It's sad that such a seemingly nice gesture was done by someone with such dark beliefs and motives.

I have to agree that the Mudd Society does not know the background of this lady and took her deed at face value.
