The children were a mixture of girls and boys.

I think she allowed photographs for private family use and enjoyment but didn't want them publically published in newspapers, magazines, etc.

(I am clueless. The term "lady" and the quoted statement bring first of all those to my mind who predated photography...)

I was sort of taken aback when I first came across this quote, and even seeing it in context still seems surprising to me. The quote was made to newsmen in 1898.
