Because he was a raging alcoholic and his marital life was filled with horrible tragedies, I'll guess the wife of Franklin Pierce.

Steve, you got it. Kudos. The quote is from a letter written by Lucretia on July 7, 1867.

RE: Presidents and First Ladies Trivia
Roger, when I made my guess I was thinking of the Garfields before they married. A few weeks ago I watched a 2 1/2 hour YouTube video on Garfield. In it the speaker said that after dating for several years Garfield became infatuated with a woman named Rebecca Selleck and only married Lucretia reluctantly. This 1867 incident wasn't mentioned at all as far as I can remember. Do you have more information about it?

I am sorry, Steve, but I do not. My source was a book entitled First Ladies Quotation Book: A Compendium of Provocative, Tender, Witty, and Important Words from the Presidents' Wives by William O. Foss.

Lucretia's personal letters were donated by the family to the LOC.
Read about the Rebecca Selleck and James Garfield relationship and also his later extramarital affair in 1864.

No Googling please.

Name the first First Lady to ride in the Inaugural Parade with her husband, after the swearing in ceremony.
