Reminder: The annual Surratt Society and "Conference" will be this Saturday (April 23) at 2 p.m. ET. After a brief business meeting, Dave Taylor will present, "John Wilkes Booth -The Making or an Assassin." All are welcome to participate, but you must pre-register on the Surratt Society website: www.surrattmuseum.org .

The issue contains information about General Hartranft's September 24th "homecoming" in Pennsylvania; and articles on the Hartranft Letterbooks and the "children" of John Wilkes Booth. From what I've only quickly looked through, I'll be printing this issue and storing it in my copy of Hartranft's Letterbook and one of my books about Booth. Can hardly wait till I come home from work tonite to read it.

Being what some people might call a "History Nerd" has it's benefits.
It's fun to see a spark of interest in someone's eyes when you can share some of these historic details about famous people and places they are only vaguely familiar with.

Gene - All the credit goes to Louise Oertly, the President of the Surratt Society and the editor of The Surratt Courier, which is published bimonthly by the Surratt Society. The Surratt Society is a separate entity from the Surratt House Museum, but in the past, the two maintained a mutual affiliation. Unfortunately, the Commission that owns and operates the Surratt House Museum has instructed the SHM staff that they are not to engage in activities on behalf of the Surratt Society.

I think we all long for the days when the yellow pages of the Courier arrived in our mailbox on a monthly basis, but the Commission has made it clear that those days are over. But thanks to the leadership of Louise Oertly, we will continue to make what we hope are interesting issues available online.
