Agreed - both the Rittenhouse Academy (very prestigious) and Georgetown College. And he worked as a pharmacist's assistant. Even though his employers testified that they couldn't trust him, it had to take a bit of brains to work in that field. The lack of trust was based more on his behavior than his knowledge.

I had a good conversation, a long time ago, with Bill Tidwell, when I suggested that Herold was dimwitted. His reply was "He has fooled you too." Further -he said "Herold was acting. He was providing misinformation and trying to convince the Law that he wasn't smart enough to cooperate in an assassination". I have yet to prove Tidwell wrong.

That would make Davy very clever, as well!

Mr. Hall said the same thing. When you read the statement given to the authorities shortly after he was returned to D.C. (after days on the run, little rest and relaxation, and harsh interrogation), Davey was very careful in what he said, skirted giving Dr. Mudd's name when asked about where Booth's leg was set, etc.
It has been my contention for almost fifty years that each one of the conspirators was chosen for a particular skill - but also because they were "rag-tag" enough not to attract anyone's attention or let people think that they were actually smart enough to pull off a kidnapping. Also, if you check out their roots, they all came from respectable families. (Yes, even the Atzerodts) |
