RE: Hello!
Quote:BettyO that's cool to read why you're so interested in the assassination of Lincoln. I always like to know the 'whys' out of curiosity. (: We have such a diversified group here, LadyAnn - that's what makes us so good.... Like my wonderful mentor, Mr. James O. Hall once said, "When the assassination bug bites you, it never lets up!" He was so right! ....Thanks for the kudos, Linda! "The Past is a foreign country...they do things differently there" - L. P. Hartley |

RE: Hello!
How right he was! The "bug" bit me when I was a child of about eight. But I became fascinated with the Lincolns(Abe and Mary)and their relationship after reading Irving Stone's "Love Is Eternal" when I was thirteen.
Since then, I have read about everything I could get my hands on concerning them. |

RE: Hello!
I didn't realize everyone would be so diverse, but, hey, that is awesome and, yes, that would be what makes everyone so good. (: For me, I haven't found any specific aspect of Lincoln or his life I'd like to study and focus on. I'm wanting to learn about every aspect of his life, try to cover everything as much as I can. (: That's what I'm aiming for, anyways! haha

RE: Hello!
As for where to start, I LOVED what Kieran wrote here in post #14 (missed to remark it then, so I do now) as the same happened to me and still goes for me:
http://rogerjnorton.com/LincolnDiscussio...l#pid34330 "Many times one hears “What book would you recommend that I read about Abraham Lincoln?” I frequently say “Pick up any book on Lincoln and start there.” Each and every book on Lincoln leads to others. I find every stage of his life so interesting and multi-layered. Once you dive in you just keep swimming." |

RE: Hello!
I'm not sure where to start either, but I've got some books on Lincoln.
Here's a list of what I've got: The Collected Works by Abraham Lincoln 9 Volumes A. Lincoln (biography) Lincoln (biography) Lincoln Legends Lincoln in Photographs Rise to Greatness Faith and Courage Father Abraham Killing Lincoln Tried by War Picturing Lincoln Lincoln’s Melancholy The Psychic Life of Abraham Lincoln Lincoln’s Virtues Lincoln’s Greatest Speeches Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln 101 Things you didn’t know about Abraham Lincoln Leadership Lessons by Abraham Lincoln Lincoln in the World Lincoln’s Battle with God Team of Rivals The Battles that made Abraham Lincoln Most Frequently Asked Questions about Abraham Lincoln House of Abraham Lincoln’s Men Lincoln Heritage Trail Cook Book (contains things Lincoln liked to eat) Here's magazines: Missouri Life (article about the women Lincoln dated) Abraham Lincoln (Life’s special magazine solely about Lincoln) The book Lincoln's Men I just came home with. haha I think I wanna start on the biography to have a general grasp of him then go from there. (: This book collection has been building since a year or two ago. I try to buy books that differ from the others. For short, don't like to buy two of the same books that talk about the same thing about Lincoln. Anyways, I tend to buy them and not read them... working on that though! However, I have read one; the Lincoln in Photographs and it was so awesome! |

RE: Hello!
Which biographies (written by whom) are those? I "envy" (not a feeling I'm actually familiar with) you a little for the "Collected Works"...However, my experience - I've never ended up disappointed with a book recommended here, so if you are unsure as for what to buy I recommend to ask forum members!

RE: Hello!
"A. Lincoln" is written by Ronald C. White, Jr. and "Lincoln" is written by David Herbert Donald.
That "Collected Works" cost me a bit. haha But when I want a book, I always do my shopping with Amazon and a magazine called Bargain Books. Thanks for the recommendation! With how many I need to read I'll probably ask which one to read first. ;) |

RE: Hello!
Brooke, another one to consider is a book written by one of our own forum members. 100 Essential Lincoln Books (2003) by Mike Burkhimer is an excellent source for finding the best books. It is very helpful in pointing a person in the right direction regarding the very top books on all aspects of Lincoln's life from cradle to grave.

I remember Stone's description (if it's accurate) of Robert's eye operation for strabismus was downright frightening. |

Roger- We think so much alike it's a little scary LOL! I still cringe when I remember that...no wonder poor Robert grew up with so many "issues"! |
