Betty, What great pictures. I especially liked the pictures of court room. I would have loved to say I was there. Reading all the posts today I would say that the conference was a total success and fun for all. I really hope to be able go next year. I also wanted to tell you that I finished your book on Paine. To be honest, I received a lot of encouragement on Saturday to write a book about Booth at Garretts. It was an idea I always had in the back of my mind, but I never knew if it would be something that would interest anyone else. With the wonderful support I was given this weekend, I'm going to do my best to make a book a reality.

So while I can't give you a copy of my speech now, hopefully in a few years I could have a book for you! We'll see.

Heath - No need for any apology because I understand anyone wanting to get a slice of the great history that our conferences have offered over the years. If we can figure out a way to get information out there without hurting our attendance (and with the cooperation of our speakers), we'll try to make it happen.

My third consecutive conference and the best of the three in my opinion. Maybe it was because I've gotten to know so many of you well and had some great conversations and adventures before & during the conference. Maybe it was because of the best batch of speakers who not only knew their subject matter but presented it well. I'm suspecting Laurie will have to cram in more seating next year.

The only downside is -- in the midst of all that I'm doing -- needing to write and produce something relevant enough to come and speak again!

On 3/17/13 jmadonna mentioned that Mary Surratt had cancer. I was not able to attend, would you please give a brief review. Thanks .

One of our excellent speakers at the conference was Dr. Blaine Houmes, who spoke on three medical mysteries related to the conspirators. One of the topics was Mary Surratt's female problems which have been "gently" reported on over the years. We know that at one point, her problems were so severe that a separate room was set up off the courtroom for Mary, and Anna was allowed to administer to her mother's needs.

There has been speculation as to what was causing the problems - change of life, fibroid tumors, etc. Blaine touched on the various possibilities, including uterine cancer, based on the sparse information available. To me, there was one specific reference in Blaine's report that certainly seemed to point to cancer - but I prefer not to post it here.

He also spoke on Powell's possible mental state and the fate of Michael O'Laughlen's remains.

Laurie, thanks for the feedback on Mary Surratt's health.
Lincoln, I do not believe there is even a remote possibility that I am related to Wm Petersen. From what I read, Wm Petersen is of German decent. (How did a German get the name Petersen) We can trace a family farm back to Denmark. Actually the original name was Pedersen, but when they got to NY the agent changed the name to the American spelling.

Thanks for explaining. Most Petersens are Danish, but some are German.
Pat's cheesesteaks are very wonderful, and another best food in Philadelphia is Tacconelli's Pizza, a little old pizza place in the Port Richmond section, one of the river wards. GQ called it one of the top ten pizza places in America. Nicholas Cage showed up when he was filming in Philadelphia in snakeskin jeans and a leather bomber coat. The owner said, "He didn't blend."
