Banner at top of page
Today you will see the banner I will be using at the top of the page. I would like to send a great big THANK YOU to Dave Taylor of the wonderful BoothieBarn website for creating the terrific banner.
Also, I see that Google's spider has discovered the site. This means the posts here will, over time, show up in Google searches. As my site is used primarily in schools, I kindly ask everyone to not post any topics, use any words, etc. not appropriate for students who are doing Lincoln-related research on their computers. This DOES NOT mean no use of humor and having an enjoyable forum - the trivia question Joe Beckert posted is an excellent example of what I am hoping for. Thank you. |

If the banner is not centered on your screen it is because the MyBB software I am using does not seem to recognize my normal HTML command for centering images. Over time, I will figure this out. But, for the time being, we will just have to accept a non-centered banner until I get things sorted out. Please be patient as this is SO different from what I am used to doing with my Lincoln website. Thank you. Roger, it's BEAUTIFUL!! Looks VERY, professional!! RE: Banner at top of page
I love the new banner and also the fact that we are learning complete Lincoln history (and good U.S. history - see post on Texas and Alaska that I am still composing an answer for) at the same time we analyze my favorite part of Lincoln history, the puzzles of the assassination.

RE: Banner at top of page
Dave Taylor (of the terrific BoothieBarn website) made a cool new banner for the forum and sent it to me last night. I have installed it, and I love it. Thank you, Dave! Although I have high confidence with certain aspects of computer work, I have zero designing abilities, so I sure do appreciate it when someone does these banners for me.

The new banner is most attractive. Dave has a strong visual sense and his design is most striking.

Dave, the more I see of your work, the more impressed I am. This is classy, not that I didn't like the previous one too.
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

Great Banner!
I would add a blue filter to try and blend it to the rest of the page but that's just a matter of taste. |

Beautiful!
I have endured a great deal of ridicule without much malice; and have received a great deal of kindness, not quite free from ridicule. I am used to it. (Letter to James H. Hackett, November 2, 1863) |

RE: Banner at top of page
It's a good-looking banner. But I have only a 15" monitor, and the banner extends way off the monitor on the right side, so that I have to horizontally scroll to see it all. The height of the banner is also too big.
A percent code in the image coding should make the banner width (and height) automatically conform to various-size monitors. Here is what the coding for the banner looks like now (it's near the beginning of the body section for the page): <img title="Lincoln Discussion Symposium" alt="Lincoln Discussion Symposium" src="http://rogerjnorton.com/banner1.jpg"></img> If you changed the coding (not sure if you can, but if you can) so it reads like this, it might solve the problem: <img width="100%" title="Lincoln Discussion Symposium" alt="Lincoln Discussion Symposium" src="http://rogerjnorton.com/banner1.jpg"></img> The banner width should also be the same size as whatever the forum width is set to. It's been awhile since I've worked with html coding. If you can't figure out how to do this stuff, maybe you can get answers from this forum: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum/cus...763fb37566 |

RE: Banner at top of page
Kate, the same is true for me, but it's due to the browser settings I use because of poor eyesight. I do this to make the print bigger and more readable. I can change my browser settings to make everything smaller, and then Dave's banner is centered on my screen. Because of the settings I use, many pages I visit on the Internet are not centered on my monitor. I do not see the right side of many web pages.
As long as the contents on the web page I am on are wider than my browser's window I have to use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the browser in order to see the right side of the page. Example of what I mean: when I go to Dave's site I do not see any of Booth's left shoulder or arm on my screen unless I use the scroll bar. Also, if you were to change your monitor's resolution to something like 1600 X 1200, I am guessing the banner would be centered, even on a small screen like yours. The HTML code you mentioned is what I use on my regular Lincoln web pages (example), but I don't want to mess with the MyBB software code for fear of goofing up the whole forum. So far no one else has mentioned this as a problem - I am curious if what I say is correct (i.e. the banner is not centered on my screen because of my own personal settings due to my eyesight). Do other folks have the problem Kate mentioned? If this is a problem with a lot of people I will get together with Dave and we can work out a solution. When I change my browser settings to normal, here is what the top part of the forum home page looks like on my monitor: |
