Hope they have made the repairs to his tomb, plus I think I sent to Joe the web site that shows the location were a lot more famous people are buried in the cemetery. It is a beautiful place. We were a bit rushed last year. I'm sure Rob could have spent more in that bookstore, given the time. The cemetery workers might frown upon us if we get out there at night with flashlights looking for headstones, but if "Abraham Lincoln Walks At Midnight", I'm kinda of curious where he goes. Laurie, when we go, we'll try to get you a better picture, maybe even get some dust off the shelf to send you. (If Osborn Oldroyd hasn't sold it all) And maybe tell you what's on the floor right in front of the shelf??? Joy thinks it could be one of the boys bicycle helmets. LOL So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

Gene: I haven't made reservations yet. Is there a name for our Group that I should mention to the reservation clerk?

RE: Springfield Tour
I had to laugh at your reference to "Nerds." As you know, Surratt House is owned and operated by a government agency, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and administered through the Department of Parks and Recreation for Prince George's County. 85% of the Parks & Rec programs are community centers, golf course, swimming pools, sports complexes, basketball courts, football fields, tennis courts and bubbles, etc.
The other 15% of us come under cultural classifications such as Arts and Cultural Heritage, Special Programs (special needs oriented), and our 40+ historic sites, nature centers, and outdoor classrooms come under Natural and Historical Resources Division - NHRD. From the very first, we called ourselves "nhrds," and it stuck. The jocks consider us that anyhow, so let's get some mileage off of it! We actually have our own newsletter, The NHRD Word. What's interesting, however, is that the NHRD sites are the ones that attract economic, heritage tourism with visitors from across the country. The other guys just get the same old county participants day in and day out. Wasn't there a movie named "Revenge of the Nerds?" That's us. |

RE: Springfield Tour
Gene, my wife and I would love to join you guys this year. We would only be able to do one day possibly two. I would love to meet you all, and am ashamed that I have lived so close for so long and have not made the trip since I was an unappreciative teen.

RE: Springfield Tour
Great, but let me encourage you to spend at least two days if you can so you can fully enjoy the experience. We use Thursday as the travel day, with Fri & Sat to eat and see the sites, then Sunday to head back home.
Honestly, if you come for only one day you'll regret not coming for two. These folks are so much fun to be around. But one day is better than none. We want to meet you and learn more about your book. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: Springfield Tour
Just wanted y'all to know, I wiped up the froth, cleaned the computer screen and key board, and just for safety's sake, Fido and I went to the vet where we tested negative for Rabies.
But with this exciting conversation on the Lincoln/Rutledge thread just a reminder about the Springfield/New Salem trip in Oct. Come see New Salem where the Lincoln/Rutledge relationship may or may not have happened. Come see the Lincoln Home where Mary and Abraham may or may not have had a happy marriage. And there's the Lincoln Herndon Law Office where Herndon may or may not have been a tolerable attorney. Then there's the Lincoln Tomb, where Abraham may or may not be buried. (I think he's there somewhere.) But wait, there's more! We ate real good last time, and while it's not official yet, I'm hoping we can eat at the Route 66 Cozy Dog Drive IN, where you can order (or not order) your very own "frothy" root beer. http://www.cozydogdrivein.com/ Joe is working on the itenerary, and Bill is saving up $ for the trip to the book store. More to come later. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: Springfield Tour
Congratulations, Gene. You turned what I thought might end up as a duel into a funny segue. I am much relieved!
I also checked out the Cozy Dog and its history. Frankly, I would have stuck with the original name of Crusty Cur... |

RE: Springfield Tour
Bill, I probably should have put this in the trivia section. But I think I will pretend I did.
Hint #1: It's a historical marker in Springfield on private property. What does this small monument mean? |
