As you know, I am very weak on Lincoln history. How did this mask come to be made before Lincoln was President?

RE: Lincoln Mask
This mask was made as Lincoln was president elect in late 1860 after the republican national convention. I hope that you are feeling better Laurie!

Laurie,

Here is a link that gives a nice, brief summary of Lincoln's life masks.

Thanks, Herb! I am feeling better, but still not ready to go back to work. I've been called a Steel Magnolia, but I think my petals are getting a little rusty...

Thanks also for the clarification on the mask. I was thrown by the early-1800s reference.

RE: Lincoln Mask
Leonard Volk made a life mask and hand molds in 1860 that are now in the collection of the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champagne. When I was 7 I got to see it in the Lincoln Library in Lincoln Hall.

RE: Lincoln Mask
I have replicas of both. Alarming to see the contrasts between the two. Lincoln aged greatly...
