Today-our museum[Canandaigua,NY-Ontario County historical societyHeart] put the Lincoln mask on display! It is very rare-only 3 known masks to be around! The mask was made by a Chicago-artist in the early 1800's.It is made of plaster and white in color.

As you know, I am very weak on Lincoln history. How did this mask come to be made before Lincoln was President?

This mask was made as Lincoln was president elect in late 1860 after the republican national convention. I hope that you are feeling better Laurie!

Laurie,

Here is a link that gives a nice, brief summary of Lincoln's life masks.

Thanks, Herb! I am feeling better, but still not ready to go back to work. I've been called a Steel Magnolia, but I think my petals are getting a little rusty...

Thanks also for the clarification on the mask. I was thrown by the early-1800s reference.

Leonard Volk made a life mask and hand molds in 1860 that are now in the collection of the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champagne. When I was 7 I got to see it in the Lincoln Library in Lincoln Hall.

I will know more about the Lincoln mask this Saturday!

I have replicas of both. Alarming to see the contrasts between the two. Lincoln aged greatly...
