Steve - At least you accept explanations and admit to being fooled. I know of some people who have been sued for giving an opinion on supposed Lincoln photos.

Ya that's a bit ridicoulous.. I understand said person may be upset they were fooled but why ask for opinions only to not listen to them.

I remember asking my wife for her opinion thinking she would agree with me. That was an educational experience.

Welcome Steve. You are doing the right thing-asking questions. Roger's advice was right-on about looking at some good books on Lincoln photographs and studying them. When I first became seriously interested in all things Lincoln about 12 yrs ago, I became convinced I had found an unknown photo of Mary Lincoln on eBay. I bought it for $35 and then started looking at all the known photos of Mary. I also contacted Roger through a website I found. Guess what? It wasn't Mary!

But I learned a lot and I still keep looking.

Anita, was it offered as an unknown photo of Mary or was it just your assumption? I have no idea about exact prizes of such artefacts, but I'd guess a multiple. Is it realistic not only to find an unknown photo but also as such a bargain?

It was offered as Mrs. Lincoln and had a civil war tax stamp and with a photographers stamp from Elmira, NY. It may have been a Mrs. Lincoln but NOT the one I had in mind. And yes, you make a good point. No one else was bidding and I was the lucky winner! What should that have told me?

But Eva, I learned a valuable lesson.
