Possibly the latest photo of Abraham Lincoln?
Hey everyone.. Steve here. New to the forum and figured we can kick it off with a tintype photo recovered from a estate of the Elwell family (who were prolific writers/politicians throughout the 1800s), in which I have became pretty good friends with one of the sons. This photo was within a old book album filled with well known people such as Charles Dickens, Dr. Samuel Mudd, and quite a few generals and so fourth. All the features match and I'm convinced.. What do you think?

RE: Possibly the latest photo of Abraham Lincoln?
Hi Steve and welcome to the forum. I do not know who this person is, but this is not Abraham Lincoln. There are many books on Lincoln photographs, and although there are some errors, two I would suggest (in case you do not have them) are Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose by Charles Hamilton and Lloyd Ostendorf and Lincoln's Photographs: A Complete Album by Lloyd Ostendorf. In all there are about 130 known photographs of Lincoln; roughly 40 are beardless and 90 with a beard. That's it, unless new discoveries are made in the future. Unfortunately what you have is not Mr. Lincoln.

RE: Possibly the latest photo of Abraham Lincoln?
I wonder how many Lincoln-admirers tried to copy his look (especially for a photo posing) in those days?!

I have to agree with Roger. The facial features are similar in some ways, but just too dissimilar to be considered real.

I appreciate everyone's input very much. Rob, let me ask you.. Which facial features do you feel are off? From my research, everything looked to match to me.

I agree with Roger as well, not Lincoln (to me, the ears are the biggest throw off), and would like to throw in this most recent article concerning Lincoln pictures:

His nose is the feature that stood out for me- not the same as AL's.

To me, this man's mouth, eyebrows and eyes look very different to Lincoln's. He looks a bit like a nearsighted person without specs.

RE: Possibly the latest photo of Abraham Lincoln?
Lol well looks like I'm not that great with faces! To me, from what I could research, everything seemed dead on (aside from the nose now that it was mentioned). I appreciate all the input everybody and I'll continue on my hopeless search for that undiscovered Abraham Lincoln photo
Cheers, Steve |

RE: Possibly the latest photo of Abraham Lincoln?
Well I don't have the photo in my collection.. Yet. My next trip over there I plan on working out a deal for the rest of the photos. I saw Lincoln and went full speed ahead for that initially.. unfortunately it is not Lincoln ;(
Soon as I acquire the rest I will be more than happy to share tho! Very good point about the shoulders and chest.. And of course the mole. I guess sometimes you get a bit excited and make rational decisions. Luckily, I did not pay much for this unknown Lincoln 'wannabe' |
