Three guesses on how he described the AL/MTL marriage in his AL biography??Wink

Interesting comments. In the only Carnegie book I have read about Lincoln, Carnegie borrowed heavily from Herndon.
I am in the middle of reading "Mary Lincoln Biography of A Marriage" by Ruth Painter Randall. A very enjoyable book. She doesn't care for Herndon's view of Mary and she does a nice job of explaining why.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I'm reading the Randall book too and am also enjoying it, although I wish it had notes or even a bibliography. I have "Herndon's Lincoln" next on the pile.

I sure agree with you and wish she had included notes in her books. In Lincoln's Sons she mentions that Tad Lincoln attended the conspiracy trial days before the Lincolns departed Washington for Chicago. She says the information on Tad attending the trial "appeared in a newspaper." I'd love to try to find the entire article, but with no citation I've never been able to research it.

Roger, I have also read that Tad attended the conspiracy trial with Robert at least once before the executions and that he also testified at the John Surratt trial. One of the drawbacks to owning and reading as many Lincoln books as I have is that I forget where I read what....Undecided

Gene, I was so DISGUSTED after reading that Carnegie is supposed to have written that AL's greatest tragedy wasn't the assassination but his marriage that I decided not to read his book.

The idea that AL would have considered a bullet to his brain more desirable than being allowed to remain with the family who adored him and a country that desperately needed him-is one of the most idiotic and cruel statements I have ever read about anyone!Angry

I very much enjoyed Ruth Randall's book. She is sympathetic to MTL without resorting to exaggeration or hagiography.
