The well-traveled Mr. Booth
I believe the attached article I found on GeneologyBank.com will definitively prove that JWB was not shot dead in Garrett's barn in April of 1865, but instead, survived to travel the world. This article appeared in The Daily Albany Argus on September 12, 1873. Seems completely credible to me.

(P.S. Hope you can open it . . . I'm not too good at this high-tech stuff.)

RE: The well-traveled Mr. Booth
He assassinated the President but didn't leave Washington for 30 days. I wonder where he stayed...

RE: The well-traveled Mr. Booth
He was, no doubt, hidden in the secret room at the Surratt boardinghouse that few knew how to find by pushing a certain book on the shelves in the parlor. This lends credence to the thought that Booth did stop at the boardinghouse after the assassination -- only it wasn't to pick up a hat, but to be hustled into that secret room. It was a story that Mrs. Surratt, Anna, Weichmann, and John Surratt all carried to their graves...

For years, I have told visitors to Surratt House that Booth is still alive and living with JFK, Elvis, and Hitler on a Pacific island with Amelia Earhart as their housekeeper. This article backs up my tongue-in-cheek claims!

I'm at work this morning, and as you can tell, a tad snippy. My apologies.

I was thinking he simply returned to his room at the National Hotel, but I defer to Kate and Laurie - your ideas are better.

RE: The well-traveled Mr. Booth
It seems the public just can't let people die- whether the persons in question were famous for good or for evil. Stories have abounded that deceased persons are alive (sounds contradictory): John Wilkes Booth, Hitler, Elvis, Tupac Shakoor, etc.

I can't remember the source, but I read somewhere recently that Americans are the most conspiracy-believing people on Earth.

Agreed! These theories are ridiculous......

Now for some good Ghost stories involving Booth - go on over to Dave's BoothieBarn!

RE: The well-traveled Mr. Booth
A quick internet search for Carroll Jackson Donelson, Carroll J. Donelson and Carroll Donelson only found the reference in Geneologybank.com. There is only the one article found. Searching muster rolls for the 8th Texas Cav, also known as Terry's Rangers fails to find an officer named Donelson. I think we have a Mississippi River story teller here who found a gullible audience. I hope this young man didn't play a few games of cards with Capt. Donelson.

You know, in my opinion Booth was killed at Garrett farm. His ego was too big for him to hiding in silence for the rest of his life like a common criminal.
