I'm back!!! We had a wonderful program at Surratt House with standing room (85+) only and huge applause for Dr. Medford, who answered questions for an hour-and-a-half after her initial talk.

However, Jim, I have to say that one of my volunteers brought me green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes fresh from her garden, and I came home and fixed a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich for dinner. YUM!

I much prefer crunchy peanut butter to the smooth variety, except in Reese's peanut butter cups. Do you like peanut butter and banana sandwiches? I guess I can assume that you do not use tartar sauce on your crab cakes? May I ask what horrible childhood experience did your mother put you through to make you detest mayonnaise? We know that it's always the mother's fault...

Triviliazing the subject, and the arguments of people one disagrees with, is what one does, alas, when the cause is lost.

The cause of trying to understand other people's viewpoints and work towards a solution will never be lost, Rosemary. But it is prudent to break deadlocks and to move forward when one door (i.e. mind) is closed. Frankly, I'm hitching a ride with Daniel and heading for a truce in Appomattox.

Friendship and working together will eventually make things work. I wish that you could have been in the audience at Surratt House yesterday to see about 60 African Americans and 25 Caucasian Americans listening to a wonderful black professor and then spending time working in tandem to discuss both history and future. There was not one agitator in the group who was trying to defeat the purpose of our museum to present an educational opportunity.

I should have added that one member of the Caucasian audience had driven from North Augusta, SC in order to hear Dr. Medford because she has admired her for years while watching C-Span.

Betty, my wife made some wonderful peanut butter fudge last week. I'm not a big fudge fan, but I ate more than my share of that stuff!!! I was in D.C. a little over a week ago, heading to N.C. I really wanted to head over to the Surratt house. Two teenage boys complaining about the length of our ride from Ma. made me think otherwise. Sounds like a great program you had yesterday, Congrats. If I lived close I would be a regular at such events.

Changing the subject from something I am interested in by yucking it up over peanut butter and mayo is ok... but I point out that it is a debate tactic to triviliaze a subject when one is out of arguments and even tried to joke re "lost cause" but, man.

Dr. Medford herself brought up the flag issue briefly in the course of her talk and related it to the ongoing problems created during the Civil War and afterwards in a terrible Reconstruction era where 6+million souls were given freedom without the education and means to take advantage of it.

She made an interesting point that, when first gaining freedom, the push was on by both sides to give the freedmen the vote first. Land came next, and education last. They quickly realized that things had to be reversed.

Trust me, she does not speak well of Andrew Johnson, who never got over his hatred of the upper class and used politics to attack them - leaving many of the freedmen caught in the middle. She also expressed frustration at the numerous attempts that have been arranged by current government officials within the past few decades to have significant dialogue on race relations. Such efforts have gone nowhere because the parties involved shirked their duty.

One more comment about Dr. Medford. She is just as personable one-on-one as she is on camera or in a classroom setting. Edna and I have been friends for almost a decade with both of us serving on the board of advisers of The Lincoln Forum and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. She is a calming and reasonable voice and keeps an open mind.

I cannot think of pre-war symbols that define either North or South, and that may be because people were more bound to their home state than to a full region???
