RE: Confederate Flag
All this recent talk about the Confederate battle flag is so much spinach. Anyone who says they can accurately look into another person's heart is either deluding themselves or trying to delude someone else. This is just another in a long series of wedge issues some folks hope to profit by.

It's not a swastika, it's not a burning cross, and while some who display it may have racist views, others don't. And, dare I say it, part of the DNA of this country is that one can have any view they want as long as it doesn't injure another.

So please, if you feel your view is the correct one and that anyone who disagrees with you is off-base, please consider that their view is just as worthwhile as yours. Being judgmental is a sword that can cut two ways.

RE: Confederate Flag
WONDERFUL posts, Laurie and Jim!

I'm so very sick of this Confederate "flag flap".....everyone should respect everyone else's perspective. The flag is not (and wasn't intended at it's inception) as a symbol of hatred. To me, a southerner, it is a symbol of MY heritage. My ancestors did not own slaves (and my ancestry has been traced back to Lincolnshire England in the 15th Century.) They came over here as indentured servants in 1692. They fought in the Revolution to help form this country and yes, most of my ancestors fought for the Confederacy - and one or two fought for the Union..... I think we must appreciate all angles of this controversy. Unfortunately there now exist various hate groups who have turned it into a symbol of strife and hatred. And I'm afraid that is all the government and certain organizations and individuals see.

Nope. I don't know you, Rosemary, and even if I did, I wouldn't be likely to judge you. Not my job.

If I knew you, I might choose to walk away when you come into view, but I do that with many worthy people. I also might perk up and be pleased and gratified to see you.

As long as you are not a mayonnaise eater, you and I would probably get along just fine. That's one issue I take into account regarding people I meet.

RE: Confederate Flag
I'm sorry to say this, Rosemary, but your continuing swipes on this subject that has been beaten to death without any earth-shaking solutions or worthwhile and relevant history pushed my last button. I'm ending my input at this point because I'm at work at Surratt House and getting ready to greet a friend of mine, Dr. Edna Greene Medford of Howard University, who will be presenting a program here this afternoon on The United States Colored Troops.

Jim - we may have to discuss our friendship... I happen to like mayonnaise!

Oh, NO!!! Well, as long as you prefer crunchy to smooth peanut butter, we should still be cordial to one another.

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Still with most people it's not that easy to meet minimum requirements. If I happen to meet you on the street please know I'm a pro-crunchy non-mayonnaise eater.

EVA!!! BABY!!!

Disclosure: My cherished wife, Patty, to whom I've been married for over 40 years, eats mayonnaise and prefers smooth peanut butter.

She also doesn't like hot sauces, which I buy in enormous amounts and varieties.

Love is so crazy.

I'd like to jump in on this conversation on the Confederate flag.
Jim, have you ever had Jalapeno mayonnaise? It's great on a roast beef sandwich. Tongue

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

Gene, I've never had mayonnaise in any way, shape, or form. I won't even eat crab cakes or crab balls if they have mayonnaise in them, and I pore over the lists of ingredients just to verify everything's mayo-free state before I eat it.

I even passed up an opportunity for two-week business trip to Sweden a few years ago because I heard they slathered mayonnaise on everything in that neck of the woods.

The very idea gave me the fantods.

OMG - ya'll are making me hungry! I only will eat crunchy peanut butter - ever had peanut butter fudge? My mom makes the best in the world!

I, too am primarily a non-mayonnaise eater - however I LOVE horseradish sauce....and spicy sauces. The jalapeno mayonnaise does sound rather good -

I am sorry you are upset. I think these last three posts on this thread are in reaction to mine, seems that way, and I dont really know what to make of that. Maybe you all dont take well to other opinions on a topic you have studied? Your reaction is far more emotional than mine. This is a forum, right? A Lincoln forum? Seems might find some lack of empathy here some time on historical people and issues. I have to think this all over. I wish you and Jim and Laurie well and peace and a nice day. I do not have to agree with you about history and current events in society to wish you the best and really mean it.

I'm back!!! We had a wonderful program at Surratt House with standing room (85+) only and huge applause for Dr. Medford, who answered questions for an hour-and-a-half after her initial talk.

However, Jim, I have to say that one of my volunteers brought me green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes fresh from her garden, and I came home and fixed a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich for dinner. YUM!

I much prefer crunchy peanut butter to the smooth variety, except in Reese's peanut butter cups. Do you like peanut butter and banana sandwiches? I guess I can assume that you do not use tartar sauce on your crab cakes? May I ask what horrible childhood experience did your mother put you through to make you detest mayonnaise? We know that it's always the mother's fault...

RE: Confederate Flag
Hey, Laurie and Betty--

Laurie, you are correct about the tarter sauce! And I've never had a banana and peanut butter sandwich, though a VFW hall I played in an Elvis tribute band served them that night in tribute to The King. By the time we took our first break, they were sold out!

Betty, my wife made some wonderful peanut butter fudge last week. I'm not a big fudge fan, but I ate more than my share of that stuff!!! As far as horseradish, I like it if it's just the horseradish and no weird additives. I had some in a great Bloody Mary recipe earlier this week. And sushi with plenty of wasabi is one of my favorites!!!

Rosieo, On many threads, even ones that are non-controversial, the conversations shift. Sometimes it's food, sometimes it's something else.
It's not personal.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I'll take "Miracle Whip" over Mayonnaise any day! continuing this Flag debate is a bit of a "Lost Cause". Now that I have offended everyone, lets meet at Appomattox and have a beer.
