Abe was asleep with his head on Mary's left shoulder and the First Lady had her head turned toward the left looking at the door. . . When she was sure the man who opened the door was Booth, she turned and looked at the President to be sure the pistol she was pointing would explode beneath the lower left earlobe of her husband. Before Mary pulled the trigger, John Wilkes Booth, drug supplier to the First Lady, realized he was the patsy in all this mess."

I'd say that the claims that JFK was shot by one of his secret service agents in the follow up car is about as asinine as this "theory" about Mary.

I have a huge problem with all these conspiracy theorists that pop up in practically every national tragedy. The proponents of them, instead of "telling the truth" about history instead do a disservice to history. I went to a lecture here in SC last week about JFK's assassination by a self professed "expert" on the subject who turned out to be instead just a sociology professor at Coker College. He spewed out for 20 minutes the most ridiculous parts of the completely ludicrous Oliver Stone movie and then opened the floor for questions. I stood and politely asked the audience to read "Case Closed" or some equally well researched REAL history before they just believed this so called expert. I then told him that he did a disservice to history because he knowingly ignores confirmed evidence that shows his whacky theories are just that. To the general population who is not as informed about history as some of us are, they believe what people like him say because they present themselves as experts and they don't know any better (plus, it makes a great story!) That's how history is corrupted and why - frankly - stupid theories like "Stanton was behind Lincoln's murder" or "Oswald had nothing to do with JFK's murder" become accepted by huge percentages of the population.

I just think it is a shame and is a mixture of general ignorance of vast parts of the population and a disbelief that great men could be killed by the simple equation of willing fanatic plus chance.

ps, in my opinion, there is no worse person than a 9/11 "truther" who argues that the WTC was imploded with dynamite by the government. It is an insult to the thousands of families who lost their loved ones.

The most disturbing part of your whole post Heath, was that that person is a Professor in a college. How many young minds will be warped because an incompetent fool like that has some influence?

I watched two TV shows about this theory last night. They did a good job presenting their case, as long as you were willing to ignore the obvious.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

I've found out that just because someone has a "Dr." in front of their name and a "PhD" behind it doesn't make them any sort of expert - although they themselves may think that having such a "title" gives them clout. Definitely not so! Being a competent, through researcher, a devotee to the craft of history and being able to weigh the evidence before presenting it is much more reliable than speculative theories. Scary that some of these folk teach kids - and teach them heaven only knows what!

RE: Mary Lincoln and Jackie Kennedy
I have been reading James Swanson's End of Days and just had myself another good cry as he recalled the dignity of the funeral. I had never read the words that Senator Mike Mansfield spoke about the fact that Jackie took off her wedding ring at Parkland Hospital and put it on her husband's hand. As I read it, I understood why JFK's loss affected so many of us. I also never realized that, upon leaving Arlington Cemetery, Mrs. Kennedy asked to be taken past the Lincoln Memorial - where her limousine stopped and allowed her to gaze up at that magnificent shrine.

Mary Lincoln was of a different time and a different temperament. She could never have endured the pomp and circumstance of her husband's funeral. I do think, however, that she knew her limitations and by not participating ensured that he would have a proper ceremony.

I don't consider myself a 9/11 truther or even a conspiracy believer, but there are what seem to me to be some good questions that people are asking. Not having any knowledge of engineering or physics or architecture, I can't really tell technically good questions from bad ones though. Even when others try to answer some of the questions and debunk the conspiracy theorists, I still don't know for sure who is telling the truth.

Here are two examples of what I mean.

Without filling an entire post with the facts debunking these ridiculous 9/11 claims, I would simply invite you to read the following investigation from Popular Mechanics takes debunks each of the "theories" (e.g., the WTC was imploded by explosives, the Pentagon was hit by a missile and not a plane, and all the other equally ignorant claims [I don't mean to call you ignorant personally, but rather I do call the perpetrators of these "theories" willfully ignorant or just plain deceivers.])
