Roger,
Wouldn't that be amazing? I sometimes wonder what "mysteries" we have the answers to and just don't know it.

I'll second that one. A big mystery indeed.

And did Mr. Forbes suffer guilt for his action?

RE: Coffee with a Conspirator - Natty - 08-08-2012 05:09 AM

I would definitely choose Lewis, but asking him two questions might be hard, because I'd probably be quite speechless!
Once I'd regained control of my tongue, I suppose I'd ask him:
1. Had he really thought the entire Seward household would let him in without question and just lead him to his victim?
2. What would his plans have been if he'd gotten away?

How about sitting in a booth with Booth and eating a burger? Shy

I'd definitely have to choose Powell.
a) I'd give him a severe telling off for getting involved with the wrong crowd.

b)I'd also have to share a salted caramel fresh cream eclair with him because I think he'd appreciate that and my guess is, he'd never tried one and I suspect I'd get a glimpse of those infamous dimples when he bit into it.

and...

c) The view would be good.

Oh, the questions.

1. Why didn't you go home as soon as you were able?
2. What possessed you to return to the Surratt Boarding house?
3. What was your fascination with JWB?
4. Was the whole episode engineered by higher authorities and if so, who or what?

Maddie,

I like you already! Please hop across the Pond and visit Surratt House -- and bring some of those eclairs with you...

Betty,

Will you or can I tell the story about Powell's picture in your guest room the time Joan spent the night at your house?

Forget Booth, I want to sit and have coffee and (especially) an elcair with MaddieM.

I think, had I gotten to him first, Lewis Powell might have said those exact words!Big Grin

Hi Maddie. I think Powell pretended to be a laborer so that he would have a disguise when he walked through the streets of Washington on his way to Mrs. Surratt's house. Also, since he didn't have a gun or knife on him, the axe could be used as a weapon.

It is a mystery to me why he went back to the boarding house. My opinion is that he underwent some kind of trauma after attacking the Seward household. Betty has said that he may have been thrown from his horse and sustained a concussion. He was without food for three days, "hunted like a dog," and perhaps he felt guilty about the bloodbath at the Sewards.

Many people in Powell's situation would have disappeared and never been heard from again. But then again, how many people have been involved with the assassination of the President and Secretary of State?

I do believe that people can do really bad things and be genuinely sorry. And he seems to have been a nice person with a compassionate streak. The concussion thing, I'm not sure about. He had 3 days, didn't he, hiding out? I know concussion can affect you for weeks afterwards, but there's just something about this that doesn't sound right to me. It makes no sense, though it is the kind of thing you'd do if you weren't thinking straight. But he thought straight enough to hide in a tree for 3 days. Thought straight enough to disguise himself and make some headgear to wear, no matter how bizarre that must have looked. Straight enough to fabricate a story for his entry into the boarding house. I dunno. It just seems odd.
