Steve Miller has told me that, like Boston Corbett's actual pistol he used to shoot Booth, the two pistols in the monument were also stolen long ago.

What's a "dug out?"

A home dug into the ground.
Usually they are about halfway below the surface. (helps to maintain a more temperate temperature during the extreme summer and winters.)
Usually made of sod or adobe brick type construction.

What's a "dug out?"

While many people have played it off as, "crazy Boston Corbett lived in a hole in the ground", a dug out was a fairly common method of shelter for those living on the great plains without a lot of lumber nearby.

So Corbett lived there after he escaped?

No, he actually lived there for a number of years before he got the job with the Kansas State Legislature that led to his crazy outburst and institutionalization. I think it was in the late-1880s when he escaped from the asylum and wandered into oblivion.

Living in one of those houses on the Kansas prarie could drive you crazy.
Watching a state legislature in action (or inaction) could do that too.
