Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - RJNorton - 06-04-2013 03:20 PM Thanks to Bob Cook for sending a photo of the monument. ![]() RE: Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - Dave Taylor - 06-04-2013 03:42 PM It's on my list of places to visit one of these days. Steve Miller has told me that, like Boston Corbett's actual pistol he used to shoot Booth, the two pistols in the monument were also stolen long ago. RE: Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - Gene C - 06-04-2013 04:47 PM A home dug into the ground. Usually they are about halfway below the surface. (helps to maintain a more temperate temperature during the extreme summer and winters.) Usually made of sod or adobe brick type construction. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.hoover.archives.gov/LIW/pioneering/images/dugout.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.hoover.archives.gov/LIW/pioneering/pioneering_walnutgrove.html&h=353&w=500&sz=23&tbnid=6NZTQo7Ai7m_7M:&tbnh=93&tbnw=132&prev=/search%3Fq%3Ddugout%2Bhouse%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=dugout+house&usg=__WWXpT0hD8t33mwrSm94Ns7V8pBw=&docid=GyXTUhHYiNFQfM&sa=X&ei=NlKuUZ6oK4rM9QT-nYHwAg&ved=0CC8Q9QEwAQ&dur=797 RE: Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - Dave Taylor - 06-04-2013 04:48 PM (06-04-2013 04:39 PM)LincolnMan Wrote: What's a "dug out?" While many people have played it off as, "crazy Boston Corbett lived in a hole in the ground", a dug out was a fairly common method of shelter for those living on the great plains without a lot of lumber nearby. RE: Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - LincolnMan - 06-04-2013 05:30 PM So Corbett lived there after he escaped? RE: Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - L Verge - 06-04-2013 07:26 PM No, he actually lived there for a number of years before he got the job with the Kansas State Legislature that led to his crazy outburst and institutionalization. I think it was in the late-1880s when he escaped from the asylum and wandered into oblivion. RE: Boston Corbett monument erected by Boy Scouts, Concordia, Kansas, 1958 - Gene C - 06-04-2013 08:35 PM Living in one of those houses on the Kansas prarie could drive you crazy. Watching a state legislature in action (or inaction) could do that too. |
