US Military Posts named for Confederate generals

This thread reminded me that I did some training at Ft. Drum. Maybe that fort doesn't exist anymore- I seem to recall that Grant spent some time there as a young U. S. Army officer. I could be wrong on that...

Bill,Fort Drum is the home of the 10th Mountain Div.It is huge and near Watertown,NY.Blackhawk -Chopper pilots also train there.When they are on R+R it's great to talk to them in the 1000 Islands.

Wow Herb! I had no idea. I think I went there for a training in 1975. So there was a Grant connection! And other great Generals, as well. Nice to know its still active.

It was at General Drum's post in Southern California that 31 Camels were sent to Cavalry in the Civil War.Stanton ordered the Camels disposed of and wrote it off as a bad idea in 1863.

Wow! I think that may have been the dumbest article I ever read. He seems to place alot of emphasis on race. Has he ever contemplated the fact that most whites of that era thought they were above Blacks. Maybe, he should try and rebrand the Democrat Party as well, since it was majority Democrats in the South. Why do we always have to be so PC and whitewash our American History. There is nothing wrong with honoring the men on both sides of the conflict. They were all Americans. They all had honor, and they all had the love for this country.

Now THAT is what I thought this whole article was about when I posted it, i.e., what brtmchl refers to. As an unreconstructed Southerner, I see this as just another attempt by certain parties--politicians, historians, news reporters, #%$^*@&% Yankees, whatever--to tell the rest of us how to think and live "properly" and forsake our past, which is deemed to be too evil and "poisonous" the present and future generations. But what do I know? I am just a 70-year-old cowboy (this last sentence or two was special for Laurie). Oh, well. Back to the horse and mule corrals where reality rules--inches deep. And thanks, brtmchl!

Are you sure Herb?
I thought it was named after Lieutenant General Hugh Drum, the guy who was passed over for chief of staff by George Marshall. Before that I think it was called Fort Piney.

Drum was from Michigan and had a long distinguished career. He campaigned hard for COS which annoyed FDR. His chief backer for the job was Douglas MacArthur whom Roosevelt hated almost as much as Hitler.

When Marshall got the job, Drum was prompted to Lieutenant General. Drum was a proven organizer, trainer, knew how to run a staff effciently. Marshall kept him on active serve long after his peers had been retired by Marshall. Drum performed well in his role as one of the four Army commanders who oversaw the Army mobilization of 1940-41.

Herb - I know that Gen Richard Drum had the Drum Barracks museum named after him and that Hugh's father was a Civil War veteran. Could they have been father and son?

As some of you know, Bill makes me very mad when he puts himself down by claiming to be nothing but an old horse and mule wrangler. He's one of the smartest (and orneriest) men I know!
